MBVax Coley Fluid is not approved by regulators and
therefore is not available in Canada or the United States, except in the context
of authorized clinical trials. The company is working towards conducting
clinical trials in Canada and the United States. The timing for such possible
trials is uncertain at this time.
MBVax Coley Fluid is available at a limited number of
clinics in Mexico and the Bahamas that are government licensed to provide
experimental cancer treatments. In several countries including China, Germany,
Ireland, South Africa and Switzerland a limited number of clinics are authorized
to provide MBVax Coley Fluid therapy on a “compassionate use” basis to advanced
cancer patients. Patients with advanced cancer have end-stage disease that can
no longer be controlled by conventional therapies.
As of August 2007, 38 advanced cancer patients have
received between 3 weeks and 10 months MBVax Coley Fluid therapy. This series
represents 18 different cancer types: eight breast, six prostate, five ovarian
and three liver cancers; three lymphomas; one each melanoma, multiple myeloma,
osteosarcoma and Hodgkin’s lymphoma; and one each lung, pancreas, colon,
gastric, gall bladder, brain, rectal, tongue and esophageal cancers.
Of the 38 patients in this series:
- There were nine cases of tumor
regressions confirmed by diagnostic scan. Three selected examples:
- Breast cancer patient with tumors
in the femur, abdomen, pelvis, sternum, clavicle, and both lungs – last
x-rays showed only clavicle tumors remaining.
- Pancreatic cancer patient with
15.5 cm tumor in lower abdominal area and four liver metastases – after
three weeks therapy the tumor was 9.4 cm and the liver metastases were not
visible on ultrasound.
- Ovarian cancer patient with
multiple cancerous lesions in her abdomen – after two months therapy a CT
scan showed disappearance of all lesions except one.
- There were 15 cases of other
objective improvements such as visible or palpable tumor regression (not
confirmed by diagnostic scan), softening of tumors, and improvements in tumor
markers. Three selected examples:
- Lymphoma patient with multiple
tumors on the neck – after three weeks therapy tumors were reduced to
one-quarter original size.
- Prostate cancer patient with
metastases to the bone and cervical node, with rapid weight loss, abdominal
and bone pain, bleeding from the rectum, PSA level about 600 – after therapy
cervical node was no longer apparent, increase in weight, reduction in
cancer pain, cessation of rectal bleeding and PSA level reduced by more than
half.
- Metastatic ovarian cancer with
CA125 in the thousands – CA125 declined to 36 after two weeks of therapy.
- There were 12 cases with subjective
improvements such as reduction in cancer pain, increased mobility, improved
appetite and improved lung function. Three selected examples:
- Breast cancer patient with
multiple secondaries in lumbar and thoracic spine, and skull. Patient was
very stiff and could not climb out of bed, dress or go to the toilet without
assistance. After three weeks of therapy patient was going for daily walks
and attending to all her personal needs.
- Prostate cancer patient with
multiple secondaries in the bone, difficulty urinating, limited mobility and
cancer pain. After therapy the patient experienced stronger urinary flow,
increased mobility and less cancer pain.
- Brain cancer patient with
frequent seizures, lesion on lower spine, severe pain in lower backs and
neck. Therapy led to regression of lesion, elimination of sites of pain and
decrease in seizures.
- There were two cases with no
improvement.
While the goal of MBVax Bioscience is to increase the
awareness of and acceptance of Coley Fluid as a treatment for cancers at all
stages, the cases referenced above were at advanced stages with most patients
considered terminal. Of the 38 advanced cancer patients in this series, 10 have
died. In three cases, patients died of co-morbidities. In seven cases, Coley
Fluid therapy was discontinued and patients subsequently died of their cancers.
In four of these seven cases, therapy was provided at international clinics and
the patients were unable to continue therapy on return to their home countries
where Coley Fluid was not available.
Most patients in this series had severely compromised
immune systems due to previous therapies. Even so, in 24 of 38 patients there
was apparent regression of cancer, and in 36 of 38 patients there were quality
of life improvements including reduction or disappearance of cancer pain,
increased mobility and weight gain.
